Can I give you a little feedback?
Just curious how that phrase makes you feel. “Does your pulse spike just a little bit?
The ability to take constructive criticism is essential to our professional success. If you can’t take it, you won’t evolve .
So how do you get good at being criticized? The HR website Human Resources offers the following advice:
1. Listen carefully. 2. Pause. 3. Relax your body language. 4. Say “thank you.” 5. Write down the feedback. 6. Take some time to think about it. 7. Be grateful for it.
Note that nowhere on this list is “respond to the feedback.”
You can ask your colleague / boss / whoever to explain, give you examples, or break it down. You can ask someone else for a second opinion. But the least appropriate reaction is defensiveness.
Whether the feedback is accurate or helpful will ultimately be up to you.
Get better at taking in feedback, and you stand to grow a lot more.
